planning your visit

What to Bring:

  • Bottled water - the local tap water has a strong taste and odor; staying hydrated is critical in the coastal climate.

  • Extra underwear and socks - heat and humidity mean you’ll sweat more than expected, especially during physical activity.

  • Light, breathable clothing - cotton and moisture-wicking fabrics are ideal.

  • Rain gear - sudden coastal showers are common; a compact poncho or umbrella are useful.

  • Comfortable footwear - You’ll appreciate it during your off-hours exploring the historic downtown or waterfront.

  • Sunscreen and hate - the sun can be intense, especially near water and marsh.

  • Bug spray - Marsh-adjacent areas mean mosquitos and gnats (locally called no-see-ums) can be aggressive in warmer months.

Local Tip:

Humidity here isn’t like inland heat. Expect your clothes to feel damp most of the summer. Quick-dry fabrics and extra socks will make a huge difference.

What to Know:

The Climate

Brunswick sits on the edge of the marshlands along the Georgia coast.

Expect:

  • High humidity most of the year

  • Afternoon thunderstorms in summer

  • Mild winters compared to most of the country

The Culture

Brunswick is a working coastal town.

You’ll find:

  • Shrimp boats and working docks

  • Small locally-owned restaurants

  • Historic streets and neighborhoods

  • A slower pace of life

Locals are friendly but reserved. Respect and patience go a long way.

Safety & Awareness

Like any port city, some areas change quickly from block to block.

Good rule:
Stick to well-lit areas at night and ask locals where they recommend going.

Local Tip

If someone says something is “just down the road,” that might mean five minutes or twenty. Distances are small here, but travel time varies depending on bridges and traffic.

Transportation:

Most people arriving for training quickly realize that having a vehicle makes life easier, but it isn’t the only option.

Local Ride Services

Several locally owned services operate in Brunswick:

  • On Time Taxi – 24-hour service commonly used for rides around town and airport trips.

  • Metro Cab of Brunswick – longtime local taxi company serving the area.

  • Affordable Taxi – another local option for rides around town.

City Micro-Transit

The city recently launched Brunswick Breeze, an affordable on-demand transit service where riders can request shared rides around town through an app or phone call. Trips typically cost about $3 and cover most of the city.

If You Have a Car

Driving is simple here, but a few things to know:

  • Bridges and causeways connect the mainland to nearby islands.

  • Traffic can slow on the causeway during tourist season.

  • Parking is generally easy downtown.

Local Tip

If you plan to explore the coast often, a bike can be surprisingly useful — especially for shorter trips downtown.

Housing:

Most people staying in Brunswick for training live in short-term housing, extended-stay rentals, or shared apartments.

Common Options

  • Extended-stay motels along the north side of town

  • Monthly rentals through local property managers

  • Shared housing with others attending the same program

  • Small historic apartments downtown

Neighborhood Snapshot

Historic Downtown
Walkable, charming, and close to restaurants and coffee shops.

North Brunswick
More commercial, close to grocery stores and major roads.

Dock Junction area
Residential and convenient for commuting.

Local Tip

If you’re planning a longer stay, ask locals about month-to-month rentals. Many property owners prefer quiet working professionals staying for several months.

Prepare for Graduation & Capture Your Memories:

Training programs here are intense, but the final milestone deserves to be remembered.

Many people choose to capture their accomplishment with professional photos — whether it’s a solo portrait, group photo with classmates, or something to send home to family.

Local photographer Leslie Hand (that’s me!) specializes in capturing milestone moments in Brunswick’s historic downtown, waterfront areas, and coastal landscapes.

Sessions can include:

  • Graduation portraits

  • Classmate group photos

  • Coastal backdrop photos

  • Professional portraits for career use

Local Tip

Plan your photo session before graduation week if possible — schedules get hectic and everyone is trying to book the same time slots.
