This overlook sits across the street from the old Butler Plantation, one of the largest rice plantations in the South during its prime. The plantation was owned and operated by the Butler family, starting with Major Pierce Butler in 1790 and was eventually passed down to his great-grandson, Pierce Mease Butler. The Butlers were known for their pro-slavery position and, in 1859, Pierce Mease Butler auctioned off 436 enslaved men, women, and children to pay off some of his debts, permanently separating these families. This event became known as the Weeping Time. The plantation is now owned by the GA DNR.
